1. (a) The impulse of a force is the change in momentum of an object when a force is applied to it for a certain period of time. It is calculated as the product of the force and the time duration for which the force acts.

(b) The centre of mass of a system of particles is the point where the entire mass of the system can be considered to be concentrated. It is the average position of all the particles in the system, taking into account their masses and positions.

(ii) In the case of the three particles located at the corners of an equilateral triangle, the centre of mass is located at the centroid of the triangle. The centroid is the point where the three medians of the triangle intersect, and it divides each median into two segments, with the centroid being twice as close to the midpoint of the side as it is to each vertex.

(ii) The force exerted on the baseball while it was in contact with the bat can be calculated using the impulse-momentum theorem. The impulse experienced by the baseball is equal to the change in momentum of the baseball. The impulse is given by the product of the force exerted by the bat and the time duration of the contact. The change in momentum is given by the difference in the final and initial momenta of the baseball.

(i) Newton's law of universal gravitation states that every particle in the universe is attracted to every other particle with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them. This force is known as the gravitational force, and it acts along the line joining the centers of the two particles.
