Selective attention is the cognitive process of focusing on a particular object or task in the environment while ignoring other stimuli. It allows individuals to concentrate their limited cognitive resources on the most relevant information, filtering out distractions and irrelevant information.

For example, imagine you are at a noisy party, but you are able to focus on a single conversation and ignore the background noise. This is an example of selective attention in action. Another example is when you are studying for an exam, and you selectively focus on the material relevant to the test while ignoring other information.
